GP - Can students who are constantly on their devices actually learn?
Source: https://aeon.co/essays/can-students-who-are-constantly-on-their-devices-actually-learn
‘The people inside the cave represent people who don’t have technology, people who are stuck in the dark ages. The freed prisoner represents the way technology opens up another world,’ one student says, and the others nod. While that’s a perfectly valid interpretation, I prod them to think of the allegory in the reverse. They stare at me blankly. Finally, a quiet, thoughtful student who sits by herself raises her hand.‘Well…’ she starts uncertainly, ‘you could say that the people in the cave are those obsessed with technology. The ones who play video games all day long, who send 100 text messages a day, whose virtual lives are more real than their actual ones. Perhaps they’re the ones in the dark, while the people who can put down their devices and walk into the sun are the enlightened ones.’
GP - Is motherhood gendered?
Source: https://aeon.co/essays/when-trans-people-become-parents-who-gets-called-mother
‘There are a million non-gender specific baby names, but no non-gender specific parent names. When the words exist, it will enable us to talk about the idea. Words are created to fill needs. My children are not going to yell “Parent” when they fall over and graze their knee or when I come home.’

GP - Offenders to have rehabilitation, treatment options before sentencing
Source: http://www.channelnewsasia.com/news/singapore/offenders-to-have/2572264.html
- Pre-Sentence Protocol (2016): allows offenders who have committed less serious crimes such as petty theft, and have underlying behavioural issues to undergo treatment before the court issues a sentence
- Undergo treatment, receive counselling, take medication, and/or voluntarily undergo programmes
- Collaboration b/w the State Courts and Singapore After-Care Association (will provide counselling, befriending, monitoring of compliance and reporting to the court on progress)
Benefits
- More effective; addresses underlying behavioural issues
- e.g. repeat offenders suffering from alcohol/drug addictions
- Provides greater incentive for offenders to turn over new leaf
- e.g. past rehabilitation were conducted after the sentencing, but new protocol gives them a chance to avoid/reduce the sentence based on their behaviour
